Ireland relocation guide for Americans

Built by people who made this move

GlobalWealth360 was founded by Americans who relocated to Ireland with their family and discovered firsthand how fragmented and financially risky the move can be without the right guidance. Every process, every partner, and every sequencing principle here came out of that experience.

Five decisions determine whether a relocation to Ireland works, and the order you take them in matters more than any single one of them.

  • Residency and permits
  • Home and neighborhood
  • Schools and children
  • Your spouse or partner’s transition
  • The financial side of living abroad as a US citizen

The five decisions

Residency and permits

Your route sets the clock for everything else: arrival date, housing search window, school enrollment, the month your partner can start work. One correction up front, because it changes how you plan. Americans don’t need an entry visa for Ireland. What you need is permission to remain and, in most cases, an employment permit sorted before you fly.

The mistake we see most often is treating this as paperwork for later, only to discover that the preferred neighborhood or school no longer fits the timeline the permit imposes.

A detailed, high-angle photograph of a closed, deep brown passport booklet placed on an unfolded, aged paper world map. The map is yellowed and creased, with visible, partly legible text including 'ATLANTIC OCEAN,' 'Baffin Bay,' and 'Ellesmere Island.' The passport rests diagonally over parts of North America and the Atlantic Ocean. The entire arrangement is on a rustic, weathered wooden plank table with prominent grain patterns. The lighting is soft and natural, emphasizing the textures.

Home and neighborhood

Dublin’s rental market moves in days, not weeks, and the order matters as much as the search. School position first, neighborhood shortlist second, viewing trip third, lease last.

American families lose good properties by searching the way they would at home, expecting to spend weeks browsing and negotiating, while someone else arrives with complete documentation the same day. The rent rules also changed substantially on 1 March 2026, and most guides written before then now describe the opposite of the current position.

Our Dublin housing guide for expat families covers areas, costs, the new rules, and how to run a viewing trip.

Schools and children

Ireland has no national catchment system for school admissions, contrary to what most relocation guides tell you. Each school sets its own admissions policy, and that policy, along with the annual admission notice, determines whether your child gets a place.

Families pick a neighborhood first, assuming an address buys a school place, then find proximity sits well down a school’s ranked criteria, or that the school wasn’t oversubscribed at all. Two more things belong in the plan and almost never appear in a guide: Irish is compulsory, and the age at which your child arrives determines whether they later pay EU or non-EU university fees.

Our guide to moving to Ireland with children covers how admissions really work, the Irish exemptions and the fee question.

A detailed interior view of a quiet, sunlit, modern classroom. Multiple rows of empty student desks with white tops and black metal frames and chairs occupy the central and right areas. On the left, a large green chalkboard on stands is filled with handwritten mathematical formulas. A teacher's desk with a chair holds an open laptop and other office items. In the background, two large, multi-paned windows with dark wood frames let in warm sunlight, illuminating potted green plants on the sills and casting long, defined shadows across the dark wooden plank floor. The walls feature exposed brick details near the chalkboard. The overall atmosphere is peaceful and preparatory.
On the left, a Black woman with long dreadlocks wears a black cap, clear-framed glasses, and a black shirt, smiling fondly at the other two. Center stage is a young boy with voluminous, curly brown hair, wearing a simple grey t-shirt and vibrant red pants. He is laughing heartily with his whole being, his mouth open wide in delight, and is nestled protectively between the two women. To his right, a woman with long, fiery red curly hair, wearing a dark patterned kimono-style jacket, beams with a wide-mouthed, joyous laugh, leaning her head affectionately against the boy and the woman on the left.

Spouse and partner

A relocating partner is rebuilding a career, a network, and a community at the same time as everyone else, usually with the least support.

Families assume the permit routes differ on whether a partner can work. Since May 2024, they don’t. Partners on all three employment permit routes get Stamp 1G once family reunification is granted. What differs is when your family can join you, and on a two-year assignment, that’s the constraint worth planning around.

Our guide to accompanying partner relocation covers work rights, the family permission process and career continuity.

Financial intelligence

Moving to Ireland changes where you live. It doesn’t change your US tax obligations, because the United States taxes its citizens on worldwide income wherever they settle.

The mistake here is assuming the financial side will sort itself out and buying into Irish investment products before understanding how they’re treated under US tax rules.

Who is GlobalWealth360

A relocation advisory firm built on direct experience rather than borrowed expertise. What sets the approach apart is treating the money side of the move as seriously as the logistics, rather than bolting a tax disclaimer onto the end of a moving checklist.

Two services carry that forward.

  • Thrive360 takes individuals and families through the full sequence in this guide, from residency strategy to assembling your financial and tax team.
  • Mobility360 serves the HR and global mobility teams managing employee moves to Ireland, with the same sequencing at corporate scale.

We coordinate, plan, and assemble the professionals who execute. Immigration applications go to solicitors. The specialist work sits with the specialists.
